The Second Malaysian Burden of Disease Study

NMRR-10-758-6818

Principal Investigator: Dr Mohd Azahadi Omar

The burden of disease and injury can be estimated in disability-adjusted-life year (DALY) by combining years of life lost due to premature mortality (YLL) and years of life lost due to time lived in states of less than full health (YLD).  The First Malaysian Burden of Disease and Injury Study was conducted in 2000 to provide the first detailed and consistent epidemiological estimates for a broad range of diseases and injuries in Malaysia.

The Second Malaysian Burden of Disease and Injury Study aimes to provide up-to-date estimates of burden of diseases and injuries in Malaysia by age and sex using the latest and most complete epidemiological data (i.e. year 2008).  Findings from the study revealed that the top 3 causes of death are ischaemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease (stroke) and road traffic injury.  Approximately 75% of DALYs were attributable to noncommunicable diseases (Group II), with ischaemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease (stroke) and diabetes mellitus being the top 3 burden contributors.
